NYSIF: 31% of COVID Claimants Suffer Long-Term Illness, but Rate Declining
SOURCE New York State Insurance Fund
NYSIF REPORT EXECUTIVE SUMMARY EXCERPT First, Long Covid is an emerging threat to public health with ongoing, cascading, and yet unclear implications for employers, households, individuals, and the economy. Indeed, with each passing day, the number of people affected by Long Covid grows, and with it, the need to understand the condition and its effects. Second, reliable data is lacking, which, together with the subjective and wide-ranging nature of symptoms across numerous organ systems, makes defining, diagnosing, and researching Long Covid a formidable challenge.
This report seeks to leverage NYSIF’s data to contribute to the broader research on Long Covid. It analyzes the more than 3,000 established Covid-19 workers’ compensation claims NYSIF received between January 1, 2020, and March 31, 2022, to ascertain:
How many claimants developed Long Covid.
The most common symptoms they suffered.
Claimants’ experience getting back to everyday work life.
How Long Covid has affected various claimant groups, including women, older adults, those hospitalized for their initial infection, those with comorbidities, and essential workers.
Early diagnosis and early intervention are the keys to minimizing these risks. ProMedView has workforce resources and solutions to mitigate the risks associated with COVID and COVID complications.
